"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." (Matthew 4:19 NIV)
I used to think that this passage of scripture was talking to church going, bible believing, tithing christians who just needed to be challenged a bit to make disciples because they were getting a bit too comfy in church attending every Sunday, living good lives, doing good works but never really taking the time to go out and reach out to their next door neighbors. I was wrong.
Now I know that when Jesus spoke this words to Peter and Andrew, they weren't even believers of Christ yet. In fact, that conversation was one of their first ones with Christ. Jesus didn't say, "hey guys, wassup? Want to hang out?" no Jesus minced no words, and wasted no time and went straight to the point. Come with me, you have a purpose to fulfill; come with me, you've got an appointment with destiny. It is time to stop living your life without purpose; it is time you meet ME.
Imagine the audacity of Jesus...
He asked unbelievers to follow him right on the spot and on top of that, gave them a mission. And sometimes we are so shy and embarrassed to invite people to give their lives to Jesus despite having attended church services bazillion (it's not a word. I know) times already.
Lord may I have your boldness to call people to surrender to you every time I go up the stage to preach not only to new believers but especially to unbelievers. Let me have the words to speak today that will captivate not only the disciples of Christ but also the those who will come for the first time just to check us out.
